The Victoria County Veterans Council is busy organizing Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies, aimed to honor and remember military servicemen and women.

Beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the steps of the Victoria Courthouse, 21 flags will be distributed to volunteers and blessed, said Veterans Council Secretary Marvin Lockhart.

"We're going to drive them around to the cemeteries and put them up," Lockhart said, mentioning 21 area cemeteries that will be decorated with American flags.

When the flags are erected, volunteers will return downtown to DeLeon Plaza for the 11 a.m. Memorial Day ceremonies.

Gary Moses will serve as the master of ceremonies.

The Rev. Stan Deboe, pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, will give the invocation.

About 100 names of Victoria soldiers who died in the past year will be read aloud three times, Lockhart said. After 10 names are read, the bell of remembrance will be rung and saluted.

Each of the county's veterans organizations will lay a wreath at 11:30 a.m. on the steps of the band stand.

The Memorial Day address will be given by Army Col. Michael Petrash, followed by a benediction from Army military chaplain, Lt. Col. Michael Couchman.

Catholic War Veterans will provide a firing squad. Trumpeter Charles Hauboldt III will play taps.

At the end of the day, volunteers will return to the cemeteries to pick up the flags and courthouse flags will return to full staff.
