Annual Day of Caring set for June 15

How it works:

The Matagorda County United Way sends out information to area churches and partner agencies letting families know where to submit applications for small household or organizational projects that they need help with. These projects must be minor enough to complete in a day. Some examples include building and installing wheel chair ramps, installing hand rails, power washing drive ways/houses, installing ceiling fans, painting, cleaning, landscaping, and mowing. The project requests are received and reviewed for eligibility. It is then that the group of Matagorda County United Way volunteers overseeing the Day of Caring will do their best to fulfill those requests. If the projects are out of the scope of the event, they will do their best in getting you in touch with someone who may help out at a later time.

What: Matagroda County United Way fourth annual Day of Caring.

When: Friday, June 15, 2012

Where: Meet on 6th street and Elm (Across H-E-B) at 7:30 a.m.

The fourth annual Matagorda County United Way Day of Caring is set for Friday, June 15.

The Day or Caring project was established with the idea of encouraging service opportunities in local communities, said Melanie Boening United Way board secretary.

The United Way of Matagorda County has produced the Day of Caring Service project for the past three years with different companies and organizations as a network of resources. The Day of Caring service projects helps both disabled and elderly families in need.

Projects include planting flowers, building wheelchair ramps, paint porches, window frames, railings and rooms. Cleaning carpets and windows and pressure washing.

This year the day of caring was changed to Friday, June 15 duet to the Memorial Day holiday, local graduations and other events happening in the county.

The day starts with volunteers meeting at 7:30 a.m. across from H-E-B for a short gathering. Breakfast and lunch are served for volunteers.

By volunteering in the annual event, a person can gain greater knowledge of local non-profit agencies and the services they provide.

Experience and satisfaction of making a positive impact in the community, and fullfilment of demonstrating strong corporate citizenship, said Boening.

"This volunteer event symbolizes the true spirit of Matagorda County as participants help with projects through the county," she said.

Last year more than 100 volunteers finished 15 projects at different locations throughout Bay City.
