The Victoria City-County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.



FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING NOV. 2:

Hunan Restaurant Inc., 601 E. Mockingbird Lane, Victoria. Demerits: 43. Not washing hands with warm water and soap. Store personal belongings in designated area. Cover foods in walk-in cooler. Do not stack bowls of raw meat on top of each other. Cover dry ingredients and store in containers to protect from contamination. Do not thaw raw chicken at room temperature. Use tongs or gloves when handling ready-to-eat foods. Store raw meat below produce and cooked foods. Date label cooked and ready-to-eat foods. Keep hot water supply on at all times. Hot water at hand washing sink was off. Address problem with roaches and gnats. Label bleach bucket. Concentration should be between 50-100 ppm. Use pesticides from a licensed pest control company. Need to educate employees on importance of hand washing and preventing cross contamination. Clean the can opener blade. Use storage containers that are not chipped or cracked. Five facility or equipment violations.

The New Rodeo, 407 E. Rio Grande St., Victoria. Demerits: 27. Improper cold-hold temperatures. Thaw raw meat under cold, running water. Cover salsa, lettuce and eggs. Keep raw meat below cut produce. Date-label salsa, cooked foods, pooled eggs, cut vegetables. Need paper towels at hand-washing sink and soap in the men's restroom. Address problem with flies and roaches. Remove cardboard boxes by the back door. Label spray bottles. Bleach bucket too strong. Keep ice scoop on a clean/sanitized surface. Cannot store mixer in mop sink. Five facility or equipment violations.

Speedy Stop No. 46, 5684 Highway 77 S., Victoria. Demerits: 22. Improper cold-hold temperature. Cover open chicken in the walk-in. Date label all items in coolers. Label spray bottles. Water around spray heads. Thermometer needed in deli/milk cooler. Three facility or equipment violations.

Stripes No. 9552, 10408 Zac Lentz Parkway, Victoria. Demerits: 16. Beans were left out at 75 degrees. Address problem of flies in the kitchen. Sanitize bucket less than 100 ppm. Need to post permit. Four facility or equipment violations.

The Morales Store, 10191 N. Highway 111, Edna. Demerits: 14. Need ingredients list for sandwiches. Follow proper steps for double hand washing. Need thermometers in white fridge and glass cooler. Need current permit. Two facility or equipment violations.

Wally's Restaurant, 1400 N. Virginia St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 14. Store raw food below produce. No cold water at hand-washing sink. Need to fix cold water supply at hand-washing sink. Need thermometer in the Coca Cola cooler. Two facility or equipment violations.

Mary Taquitos, 406 W. George St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 13. Date label potentially hazardous, ready-to-eat foods with seven-day use-by date. Repair leak at the three-compartment sink. Need thermometers at Coca Cola and Frigidaire coolers. Store knives and cutting board on clean and sanitized surface. Use food-grade storage bags for food storage. Recommend replacing floor and ceiling surfaces. Three facility or equipment violations.

Bay Flats Lodge, 391 Bayside Drive, Seadrift. Demerits: 10. Date-label prepared foods in cooler. Septic tank needs to be pumped. Post permits. Need a 2012 permit. Two facility or equipment violations.

Frontier Barbecue Inc., 608 N.E. St., Edna. Demerits: 8. Cover all items in the cooler. Date label all potentially hazardous foods in cooler.

Texana Food Mart, 1021 S. Wells St., Edna. Demerits: 8. All hot hold food must be kept at 135 degrees or higher. Need thermometer in glass cooler. One facility or equipment violation.

El Ahorro Taqueria No. 20, 2502 N. Laurent St., Victoria. Demerits: 7. Store raw chicken below raw bacon. Store raw bacon below cilantro and salsa in prep cooler. Do not place knives in hand washing sink. Keep bag of onions off the floor. Store utensils with handles in the same direction. One facility or equipment violation.

I-69 Arena Complex Inc., 7238 U.S. Highway 77 S., Victoria. Demerits: 7. Date label all potentially hazardous foods in the cooler. Outside sink pipes are leaking. Cut grass in the drain field. One facility or equipment violation.

Jackson Roosevelt Elementary School, 1512 Jackson St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 6. Bleach bucket too strong. Relabel spray bottles. Need thermometer in front milk coolers. Two facility or equipment violations.

Miss P's Sweet Ice Tea and Sandwiches, 4496 Cheapside Road, Westoff. Demerits: 4. Wash hands before putting on gloves.

Cuero Country Club, 1305 E. South Railroad St., Cuero; The Lariat, 1022 S. Wells St., Edna; Victoria East High School Kitchen, 4103 E. Mockingbird Lane, Victoria; Family Dollar Store No. 2524, 203 W. Gonzales St., Yoakum. Demerits: 3.

Maya Mexican Restaurant, 1909 N. Esplanade St., Cuero, inspected Oct. 9 with 26 demerits. Re-inspected Oct. 24, cooling violation corrected.

La Antigua, 737 N. Highway 35, Port Lavaca, inspected Oct. 10 with 15 demerits. Re-inspected Oct. 24, cold hold violation corrected.
