A Victoria man was killed Tuesday night after he was shot in the 500 block of East South Street.
Johnny Salazar, 31, was rushed to DeTar Hospital Navarro soon after the call came in at 8:12 p.m., but Sgt. Jason Turner of the Victoria Police Department said he did not survive.
"No one is in custody, but we are currently following leads at this time," Turner said.
Porfirio Perez, a resident of the neighborhood, said he heard two gunshots but did not step outside his home until police arrived minutes later.
"They took one man out in a stretcher," Perez said. "We were just - when I looked out the door he looked really hurt."
Victoria Police Officer Heather Rodriguez said witnesses heard the two shots and saw two vehicles in the area that may be linked to the homicide.
She said it appears Salazar had an altercation with the people in the vehicles.
Rodriguez said Salazar was found on the ground and officials are looking for the two vehicles.
Perez, who grew up in the area and bought his own house there about ten years ago, said he was not frightened.
"It happens around here," Perez said about crime in the area.
