Why did you become a veterinarian?
My father was a vocational agriculture teacher, and three of my uncles were full-time ranchers. I was delivering piglets at 10 and pulling calves by the time I was a teenager. It seemed to me that it would be a way to make a living doing something I enjoyed.
How long have you been working with animals?
I have been a practicing veterinarian for 33 years.
What is the best part of your job?
Knowing that I have correctly diagnosed and treated a patient, then seeing them reunited with their owners.
What has been your most memorable experience as an animal doctor?
After 33 years, there are many. I think cesarean sections are the most memorable because you see life begin. Delivering a calf is also rewarding for the same reason.
What's the most exotic animal you've worked on?
I once repaired a broken leg on a 1-year-old mountain lion with a bone pin. Everything was less complicated after he was asleep.
What are three things that you could not live without?
Family, friends and barbecue.
