Children enjoying Christmas on the Square activities Friday night in downtown Victoria have another fun option.
The Children's Discovery Museum, 204 N. Main St., will be open during the event.
The museum, which has been closed since September except for private parties, will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. during the downtown visit from Santa Claus, hay rides and holiday music.
"We want children and their parents to come in and see what a wonderful place this is," said museum board member LeOlive Rogge. "It's a place worth saving."
There will be no charge for admission during Christmas on the Square, and children will be invited to make a snowflake to place on the museum's tree.
The museum's future came into question in August when the Junior League of Victoria advised the museum board that the 10-year agreement that allowed the museum to lease the Kreisler Building for $1 a year had to end.
The Junior League offered to sell the building to the museum for $300,000 and has since sought bids for its sale.
Michelle Hall, Junior League spokeswoman, said the organization is considering bids received by the Nov. 15 deadline. She did not elaborate on how many bids were received or the deadline for making a decision.
Rogge said the museum is "in limbo" until it knows exactly where it will be located.
"We'd love to stay here, to stay downtown," she said. "We have a committee looking at other buildings, other options.
"We are also exploring partnerships that will enable us to continue to keep this treasure a viable part of our community," Rogge said.
One partner has already stepped forward - an anonymous donor who has agreed to foot the bill for the salary of a new museum director.
"We also have a committee in place doing a national search for a new director," Rogge said.
Despite the uncertainty about its location, Rogge said it's an exciting time for the museum.
"We have two new exhibits ready to be installed and the dates for our annual Texas Our Texas event in March with the Mitchell Guidance Center are confirmed," she said.
