Editor's Note: To help our readers learn more about the candidates in the Nov. 6 election, we are publishing profiles on candidates in contested races. Early voting begins Oct. 22. Today's candidates are seeking the Jackson County Precinct 3 Commissioners seat.

Name: Johnny E. Belicek

Age: 57

City/county of residence: Jackson County

Office Seeking: Commissioner Precinct 3

Party Affiliation: Republican

Occupation: County Commissioner Precinct 3

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

My reasons for seeking re-election are not only to serve the people in Precinct 3 but also to be their voice. I believe that the people deserve a proven public servant.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

My 12 years of experience is the major factor in what qualifies me for this position. I have attended numerous conferences and am a graduate of the Leadership Academy class. I have also completed the Curriculum 2000 Advance Studies for County Commissioners. In addition, working for a major oil company, being in business for myself, and learning a trade at a young age has helped me to be able to sever as Commissioner of Precinct 3.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

If re-elected I will continue to always have the taxpayers in mind, and try to make the best decisions that will affect the constituents in a positive way. I will always stand up for the people of this county, and remember that Precinct 3 has a vote in what happens here. I will continue to maintain the infrastructure within the budget provided by Commissioner Court.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

My record stands out that I am willing not only to speak out, but also to take action on behalf of my constituents. I will continue to work to save the taxpayers money whenever possible and have always been fully committed to Jackson County which is necessary to be an effective manager.

Name: Bowen J. Malek

Age: 40

City/County: Edna / Jackson

Party: Democratic

Office: County Commissioner Precinct 3

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

I would like to serve in the position of county commissioner because of my strong sense of community and fiscal responsibility. Of all the different levels of government, I have always had a strong desire to serve locally because of the immediate effects you can have with your neighbors. Being a commissioner provides an opportunity to deal with people's most immediate problems, which are often the ones that affect everyone.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I believe that my 10 years of experience as an educator and administrator and my seven years as a local bank officer has prepared me to work diligently and effectively with constituents, fellow employees and finances. The knowledge attained in these fields will certainly assist me in establishing and maintaining polices that will have a noticeable and lasting impact on the county.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

If elected to this position, I will approach this role as I have those in the past. Communication on all levels will be a priority. Talking with constituents regularly as I am "out and about" on what is happening in their county, attending meetings, gathering information, and building a consensus with fellow commissioners in an effort to move the county forward. I learned years ago that you can accomplish absolutely nothing without the support of your colleagues and community.
