Editor's Note: To help our readers learn more about the candidates in the Nov. 6 election, we are publishing profiles on candidates in contested races. Early voting begins Oct. 22. Today's candidates are seeking the Wharton County sheriff's seat.

Name: Phil Rehak

Age: 49

City/county of residence: East Bernard, Wharton County

Office Seeking: Wharton County Sheriff

Party Affiliation: Democrat

Occupation: Chief of Police and Emergency Management Coordinator, City of Waller since 2009.

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

As a life-long resident of Wharton County, I've spent my 30-year law enforcement career preparing for this job. There are very real threats to our community, with our close proximity to the border and one of the nation's fastest growing counties. I am uniquely qualified to protect our citizens from today's advanced criminals who have become the norm. Now is the time for me to bring my special expertise back home, to safeguard the security of my own community.

What qualifies you to serve in this office? • 30-year law enforcement background.

• Advanced training and leadership roles at local, federal and international levels.

• Expertise in fighting drug cartels, terrorism and human trafficking.

• Seven years as U.S. Air Marshall, Department of Homeland Security.

• UN police commander for International Task Force in Kosovo.

• Volunteer firefighter in East Bernard and Waller.

• Deputy sheriff and constable, Fort Bend and Wharton counties

• A&M graduate in political science; associate degrees in criminal justice and business

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

I will improve security for local residents through: Increased patrolling and reduced response times to take criminals off the streets; to be achieved through scheduling and prioritizing deputy duties; new, advanced training programs for deputies; more frequent and thorough investigations to prosecute criminals; leveraging relationships with other agencies, to increase resources available to us; seeking more funding sources to provide equipment needed for higher efficiency.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

Answer exceeded word limit, it was cut.

I have a strong foundation of conservative values. I'm asking every Wharton County voter to choose the best man, putting aside partisan alliances.

I'm passionate about the safety of friends and neighbors in my home community. My unique background will enable Wharton County to better combat today's sophisticated criminals. I've received much specialized experience that most law officers don't have. I and my family have always been involved in local schools, church, Little League...
