Victoria driver ejected, dies in truck crash

Clemente Alcala, 43, of Victoria, was killed when the dump truck he was driving north on Farm-to-Market Road 444 near J2 Ranch Road left the roadway and flipped, ejecting him from the vehicle.

A 43-year-old Victoria man died Thursday morning when the dump truck he was driving flipped and he was ejected.

Clemente Alcala, who worked for J&R Backhoe, of Victoria, was driving to a construction site at 11:58 a.m. when he took a curve too fast on Farm-to-Market Road 444 North, said Department of Public Safety Trooper Gerald Bryant.

Bryant said the posted speed limit on the road was 60 miles per hour, but the recommended speed dropped to 35 miles per hour for going around the curve. Bryant said Alcala was traveling close to the speed limit when he rounded the corner.

The truck flipped at least one time. The wreck was near J2 Ranch Road in Inez.

Justice of the Peace Richard Castillo conducted an inquest and pronounced Alcala dead at the scene.

FM 444 was closed briefly about 2:30 p.m. toward U.S. Highway 59 so wrecker drivers could remove the damaged truck.
