Editor's Note: To help our readers learn more about the candidates in the Nov. 6 election, we are publishing profiles on candidates in contested races. Early voting begins Oct. 22. Today's candidates are seeking the Goliad County Sheriff's job.

Name: Kirby Brumby

Age: 66

City/county of residence: Goliad

Office Seeking: Sheriff

Party Affiliation: Republican

Occupation: Sheriff

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

I was elected approximately four years ago on a campaign to provide sound judgment, ethics, fairness and financial management to the sheriff's office in Goliad County. I have done that, as well as provide leadership, moving the office toward a more effective, professional law enforcement agency. I want to continue building on the progress made.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I have served as sheriff for more than three years and constable for four years. I am TCLEOSE licensed, but also have a bachelor of science in biology and chemistry with a teaching certificate, having taught at-risk students for 22 years. I have experience managing large budgets, which has enabled me to save taxpayer money. I carried out many desired improvements when elected in 2008, bringing important professional changes to the Goliad County Sheriff's Office.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

I will continue serving as a full-time working sheriff, looking for more ways to reduce drugs in our schools and community. I have and will continue to support the community and all the activities in Goliad County. I enforce the law equally and fairly. I make myself available around the city and county, but also have an open door in my office with a policy to return all phone calls.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

Goliad County is facing challenging times with the reduction in appraised property values forcing cuts in the budget. I feel I am the person to lead the sheriff's office with high ethical standards and yet conservative financial values.

Name: Paul R. San Miguel

Age: 44

City/county of residence: Goliad

Office Seeking: County Sheriff

Party Affiliation: Democrat

Occupation: Unemployed deputy sheriff

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

I have lived my life in Goliad County serving in the Goliad Volunteer Fire Department. and the Goliad County Sheriff's Office as a deputy sheriff for a combined 19 years. While living in and serving the community it has been my pleasure and privilege to meet and know many people that I call my friends. I believe the elected position of sheriff is made by the people for the people and I wish to continue serving my community.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I have lived in Goliad County all of my life and was a Goliad County deputy sheriff for seven years, holding the positions of patrol corporal and patrol sergeant. Being employed as a deputy by two different administrations puts me into a unique position. I can see the shortcomings of each department while looking to improve the positives. Knowing the county and the people gives me an edge to serve our citizens in all emergency services.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

When elected, I intend to enhance patrol procedures, improve deputy schedules and provide more patrol deputies on the streets and not in the office. I will increase involvement with the school system, focus on drugs and alcohol abuse in our community and I will improve the training of all sheriff's office employees, providing monthly training on a regular schedule. I will know the needs of the people and strive to meet those needs. Be available to the people anytime.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

In 1997, I became a volunteer firefighter and instantly became aware of my joy in helping people. When I became a deputy sheriff, I became aware that serving my community had become a passion, and I have never been happier with a job. Now, I wish to become sheriff so I can help my community like never before. I appreciate all the support I am receiving from the people of Goliad and look forward to the upcoming election.
