DeWitt County Sheriff

Jode Zavesky

Editor's Note: To help our readers learn more about the candidates in the Nov. 6 election, we are publishing profiles on candidates in contested races. Early voting begins Oct. 22. Today's candidates are seeking the DeWitt County Sheriff job.

Name: Jode Zavesky

Age: 53

City/county of residence: Cuero, DeWitt County

Office Seeking: Sheriff

Party Affiliation: Republican

Occupation: DeWitt County Sheriff

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

For my entire adult life I have been involved in public service, whether it was through my professional career or personnel time. I believe that the communities we live in are only as good as we make them. I have served the citizens of DeWitt County since 1997 as a reserve deputy, constable and now sheriff. To be successful, you must serve the community in all aspects and I do.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I am the only candidate with budget and management experience needed to lead our growing department. Having been exposed to the budget process and personnel management for more than 15 years, gives me the unique insight to running a professional law enforcement agency that our citizens deserve within a conservative budget. I hold a master peace officer certification with more than 1,400 hours of training and more than 20 years of experience.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

Our continued growth to meet the needs of our citizens is paramount. I have experienced the growth of the Eagle Ford Shale and its impact on all of DeWitt County. Our enhanced patrols in the problem areas of the county will continue while working hard to meet needs of the entire county. We will also build on our previous drug investigations that we completed in Yoakum, Cuero and Yorktown, where more than 30 were arrested.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

My goal is to give the citizens of DeWitt County the best possible protection while taking a conservative approach to the taxpayers' wallet. I am especially proud that the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office has operated on the smallest percentage of the taxpayer budget, when compared to surrounding small counties while operating the largest detention center. The detention center will add more than $250,000 in 2012 to the general fund by housing prisoners for other agencies.

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

The citizens of this county deserve an accessible, professional and accountable sheriff. As DeWitt County Sheriff, I will work in a courteous and open manner, always respecting and serving the people in DeWitt County and will be a frugal steward of their hard earned tax dollars that are budgeted to the office of the sheriff. I am a man of integrity and for doing what is right for the citizens of DeWitt County.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I was sworn in as a peace officer for the city of Victoria in 2000. I have compiled more than 1,500 hours of continuing education and currently hold an intermediate peace officer license. I served as a patrolman, senior patrolman, and field training officer. I was a detective for the property, assault and juvenile teams, where I investigated thefts, burglaries, assaults and homicides - adult and child. I was a patrolman and housing authority officer for the Cuero Police Department.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

When elected, my job as sheriff is to protect and serve the citizens of DeWitt County, to enforce the laws of this county and uphold the Constitution of the United States. This job is a full-time job, which I am committed to do and will not have any outside business interests. I will instill leadership, teamwork, professionalism, confidence, and cooperation with all departments to get the job done.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

In my law enforcement career I have also been the district attorney liaison. I have also served on the Career Review Board for the Victoria Police Department, which interviews new hires and interviews current officers to promote. I will have an open mind and will seek advice from others, if need be, to make the best decisions for the citizens of DeWitt County.
