AARP Chapter 829-Victoria hosts meeting

AARP Chapter 829-Victoria had their Sept. 25 meeting at 1 p.m. at the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center. The meeting was the annual potential new member social.

Dr. Efren Diaz DeLeon, president, welcomed all. The invocation was led by chaplain Natalie Gilbert followed by the pledge of allegiance to the United States flag and the Texas flag.

It was reported that members Ann Carver and Angie Montez were ill.

Happy birthday was sung to Natalie Gilbert, 95 years old, and Gayle Harvey for their September birthdays.

Dr. De Leon thanked Margaret Peoples, Maria Alvarado and Bea Rodriguez for their part in organizing this meeting.

Reports were heard from Yvonne Smith and Laddie Janda.

New members welcomed into the chapter for 2013 were Melveria Richie, Santos Rodriguez, Rosa Benevides and Lupe Gutierrez.

National Night Out was discussed. The event took place Oct. 2 at the Victoria County Senior Citizens Navarro side parking lot. Ice cream was provided. Personnel from the Victoria Police Dept. will visit with the group. AARP members want to say "good-bye" to crime.

The next meeting is Oct. 30.
