The celebration of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's acquisition of the Goose Island State Park - Big Tree Ranch Unit begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
The celebration will be at The Big Tree, located 12 miles north of Rockport in Goose Island State Park on Park Road No. 13.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and The Nature Conservancy have been working for several years to obtain funding to acquire this property.
The Big Tree Unit at Goose Island State Park has been identified as important habitat for the endangered whooping cranes and other species.
Featured speakers at the celebration are Brent Leisure, director of state parks, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and officials from other agencies will comment at the event.
The celebration begins with bird walks at 7:30 a.m., interpretive programs at 9 a.m., a ceremony and featured speakers at 11 a.m. and more interpretive programs at 12:30 p.m.
Refreshments will be provided by Lamar Woman's Club. Participants should bring binoculars and bug spray.
