TxDOT axes 'life in the fast lane'

Oct. 12, 2012 at 5:12 a.m.

WHAT IS PLANNED

TxDOT to install about 3,400 passing signs by summer 2013.

Texas Department of Transportation is asking drivers to move over.

TxDOT will install additional "Left Lane for Passing Only" signs on all highways with a speed limit of 75 mph or higher.

With the increasing number of highways getting 75 mph speed limits, the signs should help make traveling safer, officials said.

The signs are enforceable and violators can be stopped and ticketed by law enforcement.

Carol Rawson, TxDOT's traffic operations division director, said in a news release that the signs will help ensure that vehicles traveling at the posted speed limit will not be forced to make excessive lane changes when encountering a slower-moving vehicle.

"We want to make sure that travelers on our highways have a safe, efficient and enjoyable trip," Rawson said. "Reminding the public that slower moving vehicles should use right lanes and that passing vehicles use left lanes will help improve safety on our highways."
