My name is Dennis M. Kocian Sr. and I'm running for Lavaca County Sheriff. I was born in Moulton in Lavaca County and raised on a small family farm with three brothers and five sisters. My parents are the late Henry and Bessie Fikac Kocian. My father served as county commissioner for 28 years for Lavaca County. Graduating from Moulton High School, I then completed courses at Durhams Business College in Houston, and Peace Officers training at the Victoria College Police Academy. I am married to Joyce Henke and I have three children and four grandchildren. My family and I are members of the Sacred Heart Parish of Hallettsville. I am a member of the American Legion Post No. 230 and the Vietnam Veterans Organization No. 854 of Hallettsville. I am a dedicated donor to the civic and youth programs in Lavaca County.
In 1966, I enlisted in the United States Army for three years. I trained in Fort Polk, La., Fort Ord, Calif., and Fort Knox, Ky., completing my remaining duty in Budingen, Germany and Fort Hood. I was honorably discharged with a Rank of Specialist E5 from the Army.
My career in law enforcement began in 1977, when I became a reserve deputy for Lavaca County. I served as captain of the Lavaca County Sheriff's Reserve. Through the years, I have obtained my peace officer's license with the state of Texas Commission on law enforcement standards and education. I have served as a peace officer with the Lavaca County Sheriff's, the Gonzales County Sheriff's Offices, and Precinct 1's Constable's Offices, participating in numerous investigations and arrests in serving and protecting our community. I was president of the Lavaca County Ambulance Service, where with the help of Bill Wilson, we organized what is known as "Tri City." Tri City is a service that provides better communication and training between Emergency Services and County Government Agencies for Hallettsville, Moulton and Shiner. I worked for the local Ford dealership as their service manager until I opened my own shop so that I could support our community.
I will enforce the laws of the state of Texas fairly, honestly and with the full understanding of equal enforcement of the law for all Lavaca County citizens. One area I would like to focus on is the drug trafficking and drug sales going on in our county.
My goals when elected sheriff are: • Making Lavaca County a safer place to raise your children and grandchildren
• Hiring more reserve deputies, both male and female
• Better coverage of the county by its deputies in Lavaca County
• A more efficient Sheriff's Office and jail for Lavaca County
• A better working relationship with the local city governments, city police departments, constables, Department of Public Safety, and the game wardens in Lavaca County.
I am fair, honest, dependable and dedicated to the citizens of Lavaca County. My 36 years of law enforcement, 42 years of management experience and 22 years of emergency medical service for this county exemplify my credentials and desire to be an active, strong and trusted Sheriff for Lavaca County. My life of working with and for people, and meeting their needs is of the upmost importance to me. Please exercise your right to vote in the November 6th election. Our future depends on us as a people of choice! I appreciate and ask sincerely for the opportunity to be "your sheriff of Lavaca County."
