The Bloomington school board will hold a trustee election on Nov 6. Two position are contested, places 5 and 3. Here is what the Place 5 candidates have to say about their campaign.

Name: Bacilio Cantu

Age: 71

City/county of residence: Bloomington/Victoria

Office seeking: Place 5, Bloomington School Board of Trustees

Party Affiliation: Democrat

Occupation: Retired

Why do you want to serve in the office you are seeking?

Why? Because the current board president is micro-managing the school system.

The school is spending too much money on things that are not going to benefit the student body. He is only satisfying his own ego and agenda.

This type of school government has no place in a school system.

We have to remember that this school is financed with taxpayer monies, it is a public educational institution and all monies should go toward the education of our students.

What qualifies you to serve in this office?

I am a former member of the board of trustees of the Bloomington school district having served for more than 17 years. I served as vice president several times and president five different times.

Currently, I am retired after working for more than 33 years for the DuPont Chemical Company of Victoria.

As you all can see I have the time, the experience and the energy to serve as a school board member and I will fully appreciate your vote of confidence.

If elected, how will you go about serving your constituents?

My constituents are the students, the parents and the taxpayers of this school district.

All efforts should be made by the school board and the administration to use the monies provided to run the school for the purpose of educating our students and not waste it as they are currently doing.

We don't need a high-priced school board room or another administration office.

What we need is a new cafeteria, band hall and home education cottage.

Remember people, the high school was built in 1957, that was 55 years ago and presently the school needs a great amount of upkeep.

Currently, I am a member of the facilities and safety committee. We inspect buildings and classrooms throughout the district.

I know the condition of this district.

Is there anything else you would like to discuss concerning your election?

After serving two years in the U.S. Armed Forces, from 1966 to 1968 during the Vietnam War, I moved to Bloomington in the April 1968.

I am Catholic and an active member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Bloomington.

Within the church I serve as an usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council, No. 10751.

A child must be able to read by third grade so that he can stop learning to read and start reading to learn.

For our schools to be successful, they should teach critical thinking, creativity, innovation and teamwork.
