Things aren't going swimmingly for one Victoria bird.

Kevin Shoemake went down to the duck pond at Riverside Park with his granddaughter, daughter and wife Monday afternoon, but they were distracted from tossing bits of stale bread to the water fowl by the sight of a snowy white goose with a plastic soda lid muzzled around its beak.

Victoria residents have brought their families to the duck pond for generations, content to watch the ducks and geese glide across the water and strut around the pond eating stale bread.

"It's like a landmark in Victoria," Shoemake said. "Growing up here in Victoria, it's something we've always done, going down to feed the ducks."

As a kid, feeding the birds was one of Kevin Shoemake's favorite things to do, but after a trip to the pond Monday afternoon, Shoemake isn't content to just watch the birds. Now he is trying to help that one particular goose.

A woman told Shoemake the bird had been that way for a few days, but every time anyone attempted to catch the animal to remove the lid, it darted away. The woman told him she had been making calls to try to find a professional to come help the goose but hadn't had any luck so far.

Shoemake's granddaughter didn't understand what was wrong with the bird and neither did other children, he said.

The lid is around the goose's beak in such a way that it probably can't open to eat, Shoeman said. He's worried that if someone doesn't figure out how to help the bird soon it will starve before everyone's eyes right there at the duck pond.

"I feel like if somebody brings attention to this, maybe the right person will learn about it and will come down and help the goose safely," he said. "It's not about pointing a finger at anybody, it's about helping that goose."
