Art Corner: Digital photography, pottery, watercolor classes starting
Hi Victoria. This month at the Victoria Art League we are talking classes and workshops.
We will offer two photography and four pottery classes and a watercolor three day workshop along with the ongoing children's classes.
Beginning digital photography: Jim Feig will offer two separate beginning digital photography classes. One will start Sept. 4, and will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through the end of September.
The other will meet on Thursdays starting the Sept. 6, and will continue weekly.
This class is designed to teach you how to use your camera and find out what all those buttons and dials are about. I took it a couple of months ago and Jim does a good job of explaining how your camera works and how to use it. The cost is $80. For information, contact Jim at 649-8738 or 576-0578.
Next, Jean Weeks, a nationally recognized artist from Bay City, will offer a three-day watercolor workshop Sept. 10-12.
She will demonstrate for the public at our monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Sept. 9. You are all invited to see Jean at work, see some of her paintings, and meet the artist. Time is short so if you are interested in finding out more about the workshop, call 361-575-2175.
Pottery for Beginners: On Tuesdays, for six weeks, I will teach two classes of beginning potters. This is for someone who has no pottery experience. We will learn the basic methods of building in clay and the complete process in six three-hour sessions. In the end you will have at least four finished projects. A demonstration on the wheel will be in there somewhere. We will meet each Tuesday starting Sept. 18, with our last class Oct. 23. You have your choice of classes, one meets in the afternoon from 1-4 p.m. and the other meets from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $125, which includes your clay, glazes and firings. For more information contact me at 649-8309 or 575-3216.
Pottery for those with experience: On Thursdays, I will teach two classes, lasting six weeks, for those who have taken pottery classes before. Each person will work in the building method of their choice with throwing on the wheel available. We will conclude our last class Thursday, Oct. 25 with a Raku firing. Two separate classes will be offered, from 1-4 p.m. and the other from 6-9 p.m. The cost is the same as the beginners and I can be contacted at the same numbers.
Children's classes with Michele Evans will resume Tuesday. You will need to contact her at 361-572-8093 for more information on the specific classes being taught.
Our artist of the month is Karen Burleson. We taught many years together at Victoria High School. She is a very creative person. Some of you might have read the article in the Advocate's magazine about Karen using recycled items to make art. In the article she made a unique lamp - anyway, she has painted a tribute to the 9/11 tragedy using a wooden blind and a canvas backdrop to give three impressions of that fateful day. Come view this as well as other art by Karen during the month of September.
We finished our new floor and are glad it is ready for our next meeting when Jean Weeks will be here demonstrating watercolor.
Three volunteers from Home Depot along with three Art League members including myself finished laying the flooring. I am mighty glad to get that done and hope many of you will come by and see what your donations are doing.
Thanks to Home Depot for financially and physically helping with this project and for all the other financial support through grants and gifts, both corporate and private that enables us to continue to restore and improve this lovely historic landmark we now know as the Victoria Art League. Thank you all for your continuing support.
Bill Bauer is president of the Victoria Art League.
