The Texas Department of Public Safety is searching for the driver of a maroon Ford F-150 involved in a fatal wreck Tuesday afternoon two miles north of Refugio.
Leon Dale Buff, 51, of Corpus Christi, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 77 at 2 p.m. in his Dodge 2500 pickup behind a semi-trailer when the driver of the maroon Ford F-150 pulled ahead of both vehicles and stopped. The semi trailer managed to hit the breaks in time, but Buff didn't, Texas DPS Senior Cpl. Charlie Ramirez said.
"He tried to take evasive action, but hit the semi trailer on the right rear," Ramirez said. "He (Buff) went into the bar ditch and landed near the fence line by a telephone pole."
He died on impact.
The driver of the semi trailer, who has not been identified, was not injured.
The driver of the maroon Ford F-150, described as a large man with tattoos on his arms, was last seen heading south on U.S. Highway 77. Ramirez said the driver may face charges, such as failure to stop and render aid.
"But we just want to question this individual," he said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Texas DPS at 361-698-5000.
