Bourland the Bobcat: Refugio's No. 1 fan

Refugio fan Gary Bourlind, who is operating the scoreboard for the game, waits in the press box for the Bobcats home game against the Edna Cowboys to start Sept. 7.

Even if you aren't wearing black, Gary Bourland knows you want to be a Cat.

"There are a lot of people that are big fans but they just won't admit it," said Bourland.

The Refugio County commissioner said the confidence his favorite team exudes on the field is what makes them so electric.

"Even though they don't like us, they come watch us play," Bourland said.

The Bobcats beat the Lago Vista Vikings on Friday, 28-12, increasing their no-loss record from last season up to 18 consecutive wins.

Even with his busy schedule as commissioner and the Refugio city judge, Bourland never misses a game.

"I've just been a big sports fan forever, even when I was in Goliad I followed the Bobcats there," Bourland said. "There's something about the Bobcats that just draw you to them."

At last Friday's game, Bourland said, the Lago Vista stadium was bursting at the seams with sports fans.

"There were a lot of people from Refugio there," Bourland said. "There were people sitting in lawn chairs, standing. It was probably one of the biggest crowds the stadium has seen."

The former state trooper moved to Refugio in 1972.

"I wasn't raised here, but I got here as quick as I could," Bourland said. "I watched my first Bobcat Refugio game in 1967 and I was hooked from that time on."

Although his two daughters graduated from Refugio High School years ago, he still likes to go to all the games.

"I go to the baseball, volleyball, softball, band concerts, one-act plays, track meets," Bourland said. "I'm not just a football fan, I'm a fan of the youth."
