Welcome to new 'American girl'

Editor, the Advocate:
I would like to welcome Hser Dah, who immigrated from Myanmar, and her family to the area. It is immigrants like this who glorify, magnify and shape the nation. The headline (Sept. 2) says it all: "Becoming an American Girl."
You can bet that Hser will not be engaged in tearing down Old Glory and replacing it on the school flagpole with the flag of Myanmar. There won't be any protests that the school doesn't recognize Myanmar holidays. She is on her way to becoming an American who will be a proud addition to the U.S. Her family won't be trying to make their adopted nation into a clone of the country they left; rather, they will strengthen America as did generations of immigrants from around the world before them. This is the difference between IMMIGRANTS and ALIENS. Immigrants wish to BECOME Americans; aliens wish to remain Mexican or Salvadoran or whatever and have no allegiance to the nation to which they fled.
