This week's traffic tip is in regards to Victoria, Texas City Code Chapter 22 Section 22-16, Limitations on U-Turns and Turning Around.
Sec. 22-16. - Limitations on U-turns and turning around.
(a) No driver of a vehicle shall turn such vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction upon any street in a business district.
(b) No driver of a vehicle shall turn such vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction upon any other street unless such movement can be made in safety and without interfering with any other traffic.
(Code 1960, 25-30; Ord. No. 84-5, 4, 4-2-84)
Why this specific code and how does it relate to driving in Victoria?
We have received complaints from concerned citizens about drivers making U-Turns on Navarro Street; specifically North of Zac Lentz Parkway to WalMart where there is a median. Although it is not illegal to make a U-Turn in this area, it is illegal to do so unsafely or to interfere with any other traffic.
An example of interfering with other traffic would be if a driver did a U-Turn and another vehicle had to brake, swerve or slow down to avoid hitting the vehicle making the U-Turn.
There are areas around town (e.g., Glascow Street near Academy, and Miori Street near Liberty Academy) where any U-Turn is prohibited as indicated by official signs.
The Victoria Police Department Traffic Safety Unit will enforce illegal U-turns and issue citations where necessary.
The Victoria Police Department Traffic Safety Unit invites citizens to inform us of any traffic issues that you observe. The easiest way to do this is go to our website, victoriapd.com, then go to the VPD Customer Service Request tab in the center of the page and follow the directions.
