Victoria's second annual Bootfest kicks off Oct. 5, but the downtown prep begins even sooner.
Doug Cochran, the city of Victoria's director of parks and recreation, discussed preparations Tuesday at the Victoria Economic Development Corp.'s Victoria Partnership meeting.
Cochran said police and fire department personnel will visit with downtown residents in the days leading up to Bootfest to discuss the upcoming fireworks displays.
The displays, which take place both nights of the festival, are "close-proximity shows" professionals will shoot from the top of One O'Connor Plaza. While embers will not fall to the ground, he said, people might notice paper falling after the blasts.
"It's very safe," he said.
Downtown street closures begin Oct. 4, he said.
City crews will barricade off Forrest Street, between Main and Bridge streets, at 6 a.m. to allow for stage construction, he said. Later, about 10 p.m., closures on Main, Bridge, Glass, Goodwin and Constitution streets will also take place.
The area will remain closed until clean-up is complete, about 2 a.m. Sunday.
Cochran said that, although the streets will be blocked off, the goal is to allow businesses in the affected areas to continue operations as usual. He encouraged business owners expecting deliveries or with questions or concerns to call either the city's communications office at 361-485-3110 or Parks and Recreation at 361-485-3200.
"We want to minimize the impact to you and your business," he said.
