College Q&A: Community members can take variety of tests at UHV
By Jeremy Shapiro
My son is a high school senior who needs to take an exam to comply with the Texas Success Initiative before registering for classes at UHV. When and where can he take the test?
Entrance exams for TSI compliance are just one of several types of tests that can be taken on the University of Houston-Victoria campus. The UHV Academic Center provides a variety of testing services for community members, prospective and current UHV students, as well as faculty and staff.
Ernest Amador, UHV testing coordinator, said as the university's student enrollment has grown, so has the demand for testing. During the past few years, the Academic Center has added more exams and made them available more often.
"Everything is shifting to computer-based," he said. "For instance, the paper Texas teacher certification tests used to be offered about five times a year. Now we are offering the paper-based version only twice a year and the computer-based version two to four times a month."
The most requested tests are entrance exams for incoming freshmen. The most popular choice is the ACCUPLACER, followed by the Texas Higher Education Assessment Quick Test. Both tests assess reading, writing and math skills, and satisfy TSI requirements. The law requires entering college students to demonstrate college readiness in mathematics, reading and writing before enrolling in college-level course work.
"ACCUPLACER is the most popular by far because it is computer based, the scores are instant, and it's only $30," Amador said. "It's convenient for students to take."
The ACCUPLACER is limited to students planning to attend UHV or Victoria College. The next scheduled test date is 8:30 a.m. Oct. 23 in Room 205 of the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The next THEA Quick Test is 8:30 a.m. Oct. 9 in Room 205 of the University Center.
To register for either test, call 361-570-4288. Students also have the option of making an appointment to take the ACCUPLACER at a different time.
The center also administers several other entrance exams, exit tests, certification exams and institutional tests. Some examples of other tests are: • Law School Admission Test
• Miller Analogies Test
• Graduate Record Examination subject tests
• Texas Examinations of Educator Standards
• Bilingual Proficiency Test
• Correspondence testing
