This year's alumni exhibition game will raise money for a new scholarship in the name of Megan Diaz, a former team member who died from breast cancer in 2010.
The game will see the Victoria College Pirates women's volleyball team go against the alumni volleyball team at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in the VC Sports Center gym.
Members of both teams organized the game to honor Diaz, who died a few weeks short of graduating. Her parents accepted her degree posthumously.
The team's goal is to raise money for a new scholarship fund in her name.
One of Diaz' former team members, Jenna Braeden, will play for the alumni team.
"Her memory has made breast cancer awareness a much more personal issue for those of us who had the privilege to know Megan," said Braeden, who recently finished her degree in nursing at VC and is now working as a registered nurse at DeTar North Women and Children's Center. "This game is about remembering her and celebrating her life."
Current team members, including physical therapist assistant student Kara Frederick, are also eager to help support breast cancer awareness.
"Unfortunately, many of our lives are affected by breast cancer and it feels really good to be able to help raise money and awareness," said Frederick, who is a sophomore player this year.
Both teams will compete to see who can raise the most money with raffle ticket sales. Raffle baskets will feature a T-shirt, candy, gift cards and other items. Tickets will sell for $1 each and will be available throughout the day of the game at the VC Sports Center and during the game.
Additionally, volleyball team members will sell raffle tickets around campus that day.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink T-shirts to the game.
Proceeds from game admissions, snack bar sales and raffle ticket sales will be split between the scholarship fund and breast cancer charities.
The scholarship has been established to benefit a student with financial need who is also a member of the volleyball team.
