Use of an atlatl would be a life-saving skill in "The Hunger Games."

Museum of the Coastal Bend's Bent Sticks Atlatl Club will demonstrate on Thursday during Banned Books Week.

In conjunction with observance, the museum on the Victoria College campus will host an atlatl-throwing presentation to showcase skills demonstrated in the banned book, "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins.

From 1- 2:30 p.m. Thursday, members of Atlatl Club will be in the quad area to perform demonstrations and provide instructions in the proper use of an atlatl.

An atlatl is an ancient weapon whose use preceded the bow and arrow. It's also one of humankind's first mechanical inventions.

"An atlatl is a stick with a handle on one end and a hook that engages a light dart on the other," said Sue Prudhomme, director of cultural affairs at VC and the museum. "The flipping motion of the atlatl propels the dart much faster and farther than it can be thrown by hand alone."

Participants at the demonstration are welcome to sign up to become a member of the club. Members participate in competitions and demonstrate their skills at regional events.

The demonstration is free and open to the public.

Snacks and drinks are included.
