O. C. Garza, communication director for the city of Victoria, was the speaker for the AARP Chapter 829-Victoria at their March 26 meeting. The meeting was at the Victoria County Senior Citizens Center, 603 E. Murray St.

Garza explained the changes in the city brush pick up service. He noted that the solid waste department wants residents to coordinate their yard clean up days to the times of the year that yard waste will be picked up in the resident's area. Members responded that most have to hire someone to do their yard work and must take the workers when they are available and do not think it is right for the residents to be fined for having shrub trimmings out for pickup for more than 48 hours.

Garza also explained the fact that city police will not be responding to minor wrecks. Those involved in minor collisions are to collect the name and insurance information and file the accident report themselves and report to their insurance company after calling 911 for instructions. Members' concerns were that disputes about how the accident occurred were likely to happen. Garza said witnesses are always good to have.

Garza urged everyone to vote in the May 11 city election and said everyone is welcome to attend the city council meetings and express their opinions there. He noted that the city council members are all volunteers; however, they do receive approximately $250 reimbursement for their expenses for the month. Garza told about the many improvements and growth in the city over the past years.

Dr. Efren Diaz DeLeon, president, presided at the meeting. Reports were heard from Laddie Janda and Yvonne Smith. New members Jerry and Myrtle Hensley were welcomed into the chapter.

DeLeon reminded members that there will not be an AARP meeting in April. The next meeting will be May 28.

After the meeting, refreshments were served during the fellowship hour.
