How religious is the world?

A poll released last year claims religiosity is declining worldwide, while atheism is on the rise.

American religious fell from 73 percent in 2005 to 60 percent in 2012.

Atheism, however, rose from 1 to 5 percent in the same time period.

WIN-Gallup International's "The Global Index of Religiosity and Atheism" surveyed 51,900 men and women from 57 countries and determined the countries with the highest and lowest numbers of religious believers. Here's a look at the world's Top 5 most atheist and Top 5 religious nations.

TOP 5 ATHEIST POPULATIONS:

1. China

• Religious person, 14 percent

• Nonreligious person, 30 percent

• Convinced atheist, 47 percent

• Don't know, 9 percent

2. Japan

• Religious person, 16 percent

• Nonreligious person, 31 percent

• Convinced atheist, 31 percent

• Don't know, 9 percent

3. Czech Republic

• Religious person, 20 percent

• Nonreligious person, 48 percent

• Convinced atheist, 30 percent

• Don't know, 2 percent

4. France

• Religious person, 37 percent

• Nonreligious person, 34 percent

• Convinced atheist, 29 percent

• Don't know, 1 percent

5. Korea, Rep (South)

• Religious person, 52 percent

• Nonreligious person, 31 percent

• Convinced atheist, 15 percent

• Don't know, 2 percent
