At a special meeting Monday afternoon, Victoria College Board of Trustees approved an increase in tuition for the 2013 fall semester.

In-state tuition was increased from $43 to $46 per semester credit hour, and out-of-state tuition was raised from $100 to $113.

"The tuition increase addresses an anticipated increase in the budget ... including an estimated $300,000 to implement VC's Quality Enhancement Plan," said Marketing and Communications Director Darin Kazmir.

The plan is aimed at improving student engagement and critical thinking.

A student living in Victoria County taking 12 credit hours at VC's main campus next fall would owe $996 in tuition and fees, and an out-of-county student would owe $1,560.

VC sophomore Justin Loggins, 23, said he hopes tuition does not increase the following year.

"Thirty-something dollars doesn't make too much of a difference," Loggins said. "But if it increases like this every year, we might have a problem."

This was the first time in two years VC has increased tuition, said Jennifer Yancey, vice president of college advancement and external affairs.

Out-of-state and foreign students would pay $1,800 in tuition and fees for 12 credit hours.

The state requires a minimum $200 tuition charge for nonresident students.

Fall registration for students currently enrolled begins Monday on VC's website.
