For the first time in over three decades, someone other than the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs can call themselves District 26-3A champions.

With a two-day total of 800, the Cuero girls golf team won its first district championship and ended one of the most remarkable streaks around.

"That has been our motto for the past two days, to go out and make history" Cuero head coach Colin Toot said. "The boys at Cuero for many years were really good and had a state title. The girls wanted to go out and get a title of their own."

Yoakum, who entered Tuesday's final round in fourth place, finished the tournament with an 852.

Freshman Mary Kate Krueger led the way for Cuero, shooting an 89 on Monday and a 92 on Tuesday. Sophomore Chelsea Veit had a 90 and 95, junior Jennifer Sturm a 99 and 93, senior Chassidy Blackwell a 115, 127 and junior Hannah Lucas had a pair of 132-stroke performances.

"It's a tremendous win for us," Toot said. "We're a young team, too."

Despite its 32-year streak of district title, the Lady Bulldogs' 32-year streak of making the state tournament is still intact.

"Yoakum did a great job and made a good run, but our girls were able to pull it out," Toot said.

Both Yoakum and Cuero will advance to the regional tournament this weekend at the Oso Beach Course in Corpus Christi.
