I heard something about GenTX Day. What is this all about?

GenTX Day, May 3, celebrates all Texas students and their journey toward higher education. Victoria College is partnering with Victoria school district, the University of Houston-Victoria and other organizations and businesses to promote GenTX Day activities locally.

As part of the celebration, Crossroads residents are encouraged to wear their favorite college T-shirt May 3.

"We're encouraging individuals and organizations to participate in GenTX Day, a statewide movement celebrating higher education," said Darin Kazmir, director of Marketing and Communications at Victoria College.

GenTX Day congratulates the students of Generation TX - high school students, especially graduating seniors - and reminds them of how important it is to pursue higher education.

Organizations and businesses can get involved in GenTX Day by:•  Encouraging their employees and patrons to wear a college T-shirt on GenTX Day;

•  Promoting GenTX Day using posters, flyers and other communication tools available free of charge;

• Taking photos of employees on GenTX Day and posting the photos on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #GenTXDay.

According to the GenTx website, "as students take their next steps towards realizing their futures, we will join communities across Texas in applauding their successes and supporting them as they prepare for college and careers."

"Wearing a favorite college T-shirt is fun and easy to do, and when we all do it together, we send a powerful message," Kazmir said. "Students will see people all around them united in their belief in higher education. It also invites conversations that could inspire and change a student's life."

The initiative, spearheaded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, is geared toward stimulating Texas high school students to consider continuing their education or career training as a path to higher earnings in the workforce.

"Together, we can help create a college and career-ready culture in Texas," Kazmir said.
