Bailout on US Highway 59
Officers arrest those involved in a bailout along the 7100 block of U.S. Highway 59 in Victoria.
A man and a woman, both Texas residents, were arrested Monday on suspicion of human smuggling.
The pair were arrested about 1:15 p.m., said Officer Andrew Carrizales with the Victoria Police Department. Police have not yet identified the two arrested.
The arrests came after Carrizales stopped a Ford F-150 in the 7100 block of U.S. 59 for having an obstructed windshield. During the stop, Carrizales said, a man in the bed of the pickup tried to raise the cover, and one of four passengers in the front of the truck fled.
One person suspected of entering the country illegally fled into the brush, Carrizales said, and the man was not found by pursuing Victoria police officers and Victoria County sheriff's deputies.
Carrizales said officials are not actively looking for the man, but four other suspected immigrants in the truck - two men from China and a woman and man from Mexico - are being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
