This week's spotlight mentor is County Court-at-Law No. 2 Judge Dan Gilliam, 52, who is a mentor of one student at Victoria West High School.
How long have you been a mentor for the district?
This is my first year.
What made you decide to be a mentor?
I wanted to make a difference in the lives of young people in our community, and I felt that this was a way that could be done.
What do you feel you bring to the student?
Mainly just letting them know that there are people in our community who want them to succeed in life. I also bring experience of raising my own children.
What do you enjoy most about mentoring?
I enjoy the break in my day in which a positive goal is achieved. I also enjoy a smile on a young person's face.
What have you learned from the student, educational system, etc. that has enlightened you?
I have learned that there are some positive influences, and we have some great things going forward, but it takes work to keep them positive and going forward.
