Tenants of the house, Sonia Moraida, left, and her daughter, Destiney Brooks, react after their home on the 1900 block of Guadalupe Street in Victoria was damaged in a fire. No one was home during the blaze, and there were no injuries.

A woman and her two children lost their home in a fire in the 1900 block of East Guadalupe Street early Saturday morning.

Sonia Moraida and her two children - Destiney and Quincy Brooks - will stay with family after the fire burned between 80 and 85 percent of their home.

Battalion Chief Clifton Bayer of the Victoria Fire Department said no one was in the single-story wooden structure when the fire began, and no one was injured in the blaze.

Rene Rodriguez, a neighbor, said he woke up to the sound of sirens.

"All I saw when I woke up was smoke coming out of the attic, and cops were running up and knocking on the windows, making sure no one was home. It happened so fast - then flames were coming out of the house," Rodriguez described.

The Victoria Fire Department was dispatched to the location at 7:47 a.m., and firefighters took 14 minutes to get the fire under control, Bayer said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Victoria Fire Marshal's Office, but Cheryl Hernandez, another neighbor, said she saw smoke coming from the air conditioning and said she immediately called 911.

Linda May, the emergency services director of the American Red Cross Crossroads Chapter, said it is helping the family with some of their food and clothing needs.

Family members did not wish to talk about the fire Saturday.
