The Jackson County Master Gardeners are having their "Come Grow With Us" seminar at 9 a.m. May 4. The seminar will be a field trip to the Hanslik Vegetable Garden in the Woodhi area on Hosek Road. The Master Gardeners will meet at the Jackson County Services Building parking lot and will leave from there at 8:30 a.m.

Those interested in participating in this seminar are welcomed to come along with the group, or they can go on their own. Directions to the farm are: Take Highway 59 to Telferner and take a left on FM 1686. Hosek Road joins FM 1686 just as the farm-to-market road curves left to Woodhi. The farm is on the right side of the road. Look for our signs and stop at the barn.

Kenneth Hanslik is from the Hallettsville area and did sorghum research first for Northrup King Co. and now for Chromatin Inc. He has been gardening since he was a kid and raised watermelons and cantaloupe. Today, he does cantaloupe and watermelon breeding and primarily plants melon hybrids that he has developed. Hanslik also helped to form the Victoria County Farmers Market.

Hanslik plans to show the equipment he uses in his garden, then walk through his asparagus, strawberry, blackberry and other annuals planted near his barn. Then he will take the group out to the field for a tour. He will discuss planning the garden, variety selection, pest and weed control and harvesting.

Put on your comfortable clothes and walking shoes and join us for a morning that will prove to be very interesting.
