An informative meeting was held by the Victoria County Genealogical Society on April 8. President Kenneth Booth introduced Sheron Barnes, special collections librarian at the Victoria College/University of Houston-Victoria Library, who presented the program. She told of the many research items housed at the library. The Texas and regional history collection includes more than 3,500 books about Texas and Texans. Special care is given to collecting works on the people, places and events of the Coastal Bend Region. There is a manuscript collection, institutional archives, photograph collection, which contains more than 20,000 images dating back to the Civil War, and is a regional historical resource depository for Victoria and surrounding counties since 1978 for inactive county records. There is a website for the special collections at the college on the Internet, giving much more information.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 13 at the First Christian Church Fellowship Center, 2105 N. Ben Jordan St. Visitors are always welcome, and members are encouraged to come to the meetings. The program for the next meeting will be the renovation of a plantation. For information, contact Louise Browning at 361-782-2171 or Kenneth Booth at 361-575-7584.
