LOCAL ROUNDUP: UHV softball; East baseball playoff game set

Megan Carter, Alicia Fikac and Dawn Villegas combined to allow Texas College just four hits over 10 innings, and UHV ended its regular season by crushing Texas College in a doubleheader, winning Game 1 12-0 and Game 2 15-0 both in five innings Sunday.

UHV pounded out a combined 24 hits in the two games. Brittany Arredondo led the way at the plate in the first game, going 3 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs as the Jaguars knocked in nine of their 12 runs in the first game in a second inning in which they sent 12 batters to the plate and had seven hits. In the inning, Ashley Winegeart had a home run as part of her two-hit game, and Marley Moehrig had a triple.

Villegas made short work of Texas College (1-40), striking out 10 and walking just two while allowing only two hits.

In the second game, Fikac and Carter combined to strike out eight in five innings, with each allowing only one hit. Moehrig was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs, including two triples in the second game. UHV did most of its damage in the third and fourth innings, in which they scored seven runs each.

UHV had 12 hits in the second game, with seven of the nine batters in the lineup scoring two runs each and one other scoring once.

The Jaguars wrap up the regular season 26-20. They open the Association of Independent Institutions tournament on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex against British Columbia.



EAST BASEBALL PLAYOFF SET

Victoria East baseball will open the Class 4A playoffs at home Friday with a one-game playoff against San Antonio Harlandale. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. at Riverside Stadium.

The Titans finished with a record of 19-10-1 overall and second in District 30-4A after Friday's loss to Calallen. Harlandale is 13-12 on the season after finishing third in District 29-4A.
