This week gave up some impressive catches of large speckled trout.
Though not in Texas, Calcasieu Lake in Louisiana guides admit about 70 percent of their business comes from the Lone Star State. According to Hackberry Rod and Gun, lots of 3-7 pounder trout were caught this week.
In Galveston, limits of trout were taken over scattered shell, with several five pounds or better. Matagorda anglers enjoyed big catches drifting and wading. Several 27-inchers were caught and released while drifting with plastics under corks, and waders took multiple trout to 30 inches on Corkies and soft plastics.
Fishing picked up in Baffin Bay as well, with several big fish taken by waders tossing topwaters, Corkies, MirrOlures and paddle-tail plastics.
Consistent catches of large trout have been a problem this spring, mainly due to the unstable weather and late-season cold fronts. Water temperatures had climbed to the 70s this week but quickly dipped with Wednesday's front.
If weather patterns ever decide to stabilize, we might finally see a reliable big trout bite.
Until then, keep casting.
