COLLEGE STATION - It's almost too easy for Ryder Billo.
The Goliad junior breezed through the first two rounds of the Class 2A state tennis tournament in boys singles, beating Merkel's Chase LeBlanc 6-0, 6-1 and Whitesboro's Jamison Burch 6-2, 6-2, setting up a finals match with Tuscola Jim Ned's Reese Cook at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Cook has survived to get to this point, having been taken to a tiebreaker in the first set of the first round and rallying to win his semifinal match 1-6, 6-4, 8-6.
The mixed doubles pairing of Shannon Mikesky and Aristides Espinosa from Schulenburg won their quarterfinal match against Whitney's Kelsey Leech and William Martin by a score of 6-4, 7-6 (3). Their semifinal match against Tulia's Carlos Subealdea and Madison Hoelting was suspended because of rain for a brief time, but play was resumed later in the evening. Subealdea and Hoelting defeated Mikesky and Espinosa 6-1, 6-1.
Other participants from the Crossroads were not as fortunate. Hallettsville doubles pair Tracie Smolik and Hannah Guevara lost their opening round match to the top-seeded girls double team, Wall's Sarah Adams and Shanna Collett, by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Wharton's Holi Reynolds lost in the opening round of the Class 3A girls singles tournament, falling to Delaney Schroeder of Abilene Wylie, 6-1, 6-0.
East Bernard boys doubles pair of Mac and Caleb Gideon fell in the first round as well, losing to the top-seeded Class 2A boys doubles team of Tyler Keel and Collin McMullen from White Oak, 6-1, 6-0.
