CUERO - Doug and Caraleen Flessner got in a good workout at Cuero Municipal Park recently, and it only cost $5 for 30 minutes.
"It was great, but I'm tired," Doug said after paddleboating at the park with 8-year-old granddaughter Clara Flessner aboard.
"They loved it," Flessner said of Clara and her siblings, Evan, 11, and Camden, 3.
The boys boated with grandmother Caraleen Flessner.
"It was fun," she said. "The kids enjoyed it, too. We were looking for something to do with the grandkids. It was something we could all do without going very far."
Caraleen said the experience was more than just paddleboating.
"They got to see the ducks; we did a little fishing. I was impressed. It's something we would do again with the grandkids," she said.
The grandchildren, three of the Flessners' 13, were visiting with their mother, Jeny Flessner, from Malaysia. Their father, Jeremy Flessner, works for an engineering company there.
The paddleboats on the lake began this summer as part of Cuero's "staycation" efforts, said David Danish, parks and recreation director.
"The idea came from the mayor," he said. "We started with two boats. We'd like to add two more in the next few months."
Cuero Mayor Sara Meyer said the paddleboats were another piece in the puzzle for Cuero's "staycation" activities that included Thursday night movies on the knoll with 275 to 300 people in attendance.
"We discussed the idea of adding the paddle boats and kayaks for the lake to add another activity for our citizens in the park.
"Usage of the paddle boats encourages physical activity, which we all need more of," said the mayor. "Maybe next year we can add the kayaks."
Meyer said a bike rental program is also on the drawing board for the future.
Danish said the paddleboat rentals will continue year-round.
"We get 15 to 20 rentals per week. During the weekend, it picks up," he said. "People say it's a workout, but they enjoy it."
Caraleen Flessner agreed with Danish and her husband that the experience was good exercise.
"We rented the one boat for an hour and took turns," she said. "An hour of pedaling is enough. It's a good workout."
