Diane Nunley knows she is lucky to be the back-to-back winner of the Best of Show in the annual Victoria Photography Club competition.
She captured a hummingbird in flight at her Port Lavaca home.
"You've got to be there, and you've got to be ready," said Nunley, who won last year's contest with a photograph of a roseate spoonbill. "It takes some luck.
"I was pleasantly surprised to win Best of Show again. I certainly wasn't expecting it."
Nunley, an avid birder since 2004, captured the hummingbird with a Canon 5D Mark II digital camera with a 500mm lens.
Nunley also took first place honors in the close-up or macro category and the landscape or scenic category.
The Victoria Photography Club contest drew 296 entries in nine categories, plus a special category for students up to high school age.
Nunley is grateful to be a member of the club.
"I appreciate my fellow members," she said. "I learn so much from them and enjoy the relationships with people doing something we love."
The three judges were Richard Korczynski of Korczynski's Photography in Victoria, John Martell of John Martell Photography in Rockport and Larry Doonan of Doonan Photography in Rockport.
Prize money of $1,535, as well as three special awards for high-scoring images donated by Korczynski's, were presented.
All of the entries are on display in the center court of the Victoria Mall through Saturday.
Contest sponsors included H-E-B Plus!, Jim Feig Photography, Ben Sollack, Crossroads Physical Therapy, Citi Cash, C&M Enterprises and Maples Financial.
