Athens man, 22, killed in oil-field pipeline accident
A 22-year-old Athens man died Sunday after a pipeline accident on U.S. Highway 183 north of Hochheim.
Kyle Jones was killed when a pipe wrench connecting two joints of a pipeline together spun out and struck him in the head, said Sgt. Carl Bowen with the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office.
Jones was working for Ritter Construction based out of Carthage. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the death, Bowen said.
A toxicology report was ordered, and Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Bill Robinson pronounced Jones dead about 10 p.m.
The death appeared to be accidental, Bowen said.
"They run a pretty tight operation now, but unfortunately, it is still a very dangerous job," he said.
No one else was injured in the accident.
Representatives from Ritter Construction refused to comment for this article, but federal records show the company has been cited once for a health violation from an inspection in February.
