Food service inspections

The Victoria City-County Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Food Temperature/Time Requirements category is 5 demerits; in the Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements category, 4 demerits; and in the Facility and Equipment Requirements, 3 demerits. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those in the categories of Food Temperature/Time Requirements and Personnel/Handling/Source Requirements are detailed.

FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING AUG. 9

Dairy Queen, 1409 W. Austin St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 25. Wash hands before glove use. Wash hands in between tasks. Employee drinks need lids and straws. No eating allowed in the preparation area. Freezer lid needs repair. Wash hands and change gloves in between tasks. Need thermometer in little black cooler. Post the 2013 permit. Three facility or equipment violations.

Skillet's No. 118, 2090 state Highway 35, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 22. Need soap at the hand sink to properly wash hands. Need to wash hands in between tasks. Cannot keep cigarettes on tabletop. Employees need to use containers with lids and straws. Do not use water bottles to drink out of. Must wash hands before glove use. Keep time documented on items iced down on buffet. Keep soap and paper towels at the hand sink and in the women's restroom. Do not keep spatulas in between the wall and three-compartment sink. Two facility or equipment violations.

Times Market No. 105, 312 E. Travis St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 20. Ice bags need proper labels. Dispose of out-of-date medications. Need paper towels at the hand sink and in the restroom. Clean the rodent droppings in the cabinets. Need a thermometer in the walk-in cooler. Clean the ice machine. Four facility or equipment violations.

Taqueria Vallarta, 1928 Main St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 19. Wash hands before glove use. Keep items out of hand sink. Date-label all food in coolers. Need thermometer in tabletop. One facility or equipment violation.

Habanero's, 2128 W. Main St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 14. Date-label ham with a seven-day use-by date. Water should not be turned off at the restroom hand sink. Repair the leak at the toilet. Need thermometer at Coke cooler. Two facility or equipment violations.

Japalenos Cafe, 2303 S.W. Moody St., Victoria. Demerits: 13. Improper cold-hold temperature. Cover food in the coolers. Date-label hot dogs and prepared foods. Large tabletop needs new thermometer. Recommend using something other than a paper towel to cover the rice. One facility or equipment violation.

Bauer Community Center, state Highway 35, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 9. Need thermometer in whirlpool cooler. Clean the ice machine. Need a 2013 permit. Three facility or equipment violations.

El Patio, 548 W. Main St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 7. Keep time documented on sausage and other breakfast items kept at room temperature. Clean the rear ice machine. One facility or equipment violation.

Weaver's Grocery No. 2., 1107 W. Austin St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 7. Date-label sandwiches with use-by date. Need thermometer in small glass cooler. One facility or equipment violation.

Little Caesar's, 419 N. state Highway 35, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 6. Address problem of sewer water coming up from the floor in the walk-in cooler. Tabletop needs accurate thermometer. Recommend closing the restaurant until drain is fixed in the walk-in cooler. Cannot have dirty water coming up in the establishment. Two facility or equipment violations.

Omar's Bar, 1404 Broadway St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 6. Keep items out of the hand sink. Post the previous inspections. Two facility or equipment violations.

Beef O'Brady's, 6220 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 5. Improper cold-hold temperature.

Donut Palace No. 2, 1923 W. Austin St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 4. Document time sausage rolls are out.

Magic Asian Cuisine, 101 N. Commerce St., Port Lavaca; Port Lavaca City Pool (Snack Bar), state Highway 35 and 238, Port Lavaca; Wal-Mart Super Center Store No. 1098, 400 Tiney Browning Blvd., Port Lavaca; Eskimo Hut, 1609 N. Navarro St., Victoria; Family Table Restaurant, 1102 S. Moody St., Victoria. Demerits: 3.

Cuero Football Concession, 805 Broadway St., Cuero; Devereux Foundation, 120 David Wade Drive, Victoria; Health Food House, 4206 N. Ben Jordan St., Victoria; La Rosita Bakery, 206 W. Water St., Victoria; Organic Emporium, 2918 N. Laurent St., Victoria; PJ's Seafood Shop and Diner, 1804 N. Navarro St., Victoria; Raven's, 1002 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 0.

REINSPECTIONS

Little Caesar's, 419 N. Highway 35, Port Lavaca, inspected Aug. 6 with 6 demerits. Reinspected Aug. 7 with plumbing issue repaired. Walk-in cooler has been cleaned and sanitized. OK to reopen.

Cracker Barrel No. 7, 8080 state Highway 185 S., Victoria, inspected July 2 with 20 demerits. Reinspected Aug. 1 with several violations. Improper hot-hold temperature. Need ingredient labels on packaged food. Some ice bags need labels still. Need to keep time log or hold the food at 135 degrees. Wash, rinse and sanitize dishes. Mow grass at the drain field. Clean the ice dispenser at the soda fountain. Permit needs to be more visible.

The New Rodeo, 407 E. Rio Grande St., Victoria, inspected July 19 with 20 demerits. Reinspected Aug. 1 with all violations corrected.

Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers No. 2, 2901 Houston Highway, Victoria, inspected July 5 with 12 demerits. Reinspected Aug. 7 with a cold-hold violation.
