Christus Health Plan will educate families on their options of family health care programs at a Back-to-School Healthy Start Fair on Saturday.
From noon to 4 p.m., families can gain valuable information about STAR Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program while enjoying face painting, carnival games and a magic show. Free prizes will include balloon animals, teddy bears and coloring books. The event will take place across from Dillard's in the Victoria Mall.
"There are many uninsured residents in Victoria and the surrounding areas," said Anita Leal, executive director of Christus. "Many are eligible for CHIP or Medicaid but don't think they will be approved."
More than 13,000 residents of Victoria County are enrolled in a managed Medicaid Star program.
Leal was a Medicaid recipient in Kenedy where she was reared. She also attended Victoria High School for a stint.
"This is my way of giving back to the community that supported me as a child," she said.
The Civilian Police Academy will provide child fingerprinting, Teaching Mentoring Communities will conduct vision screenings, and the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and the Victoria Food Bank will provide information on healthy snacking and lunch packing.
The fair is part of the health plan's yearlong "To Families, With Love" community-giving campaign.
The Coastal Bend area is home to six Christus hospitals.
"For the past year and a half, Christus Health Plan has been offering Medicaid and CHIP programs to the Victoria community," Leal said.
