Victoria East marching band prepares for season (video)

Aug. 17, 2013 at 3:17 a.m.

As the sun sinks in the sky over Victoria East High School, David Edge is tuning up a well-oiled machine - the Victoria East marching band.

On a full-sized replica of the football field that has been painted onto one of the school's parking lots, drum majors conduct from raised platforms, while students playing woodwind, brass and percussion instruments march carefully in formation.

Alongside them, color guard members twirl batons and air blades, which look a bit like giant, neon green plastic velociraptor claws.

Edge, director of bands for East, oversees the choreography from high above on a special platform, which, he admits ruefully, was supposed to be built at the 50-yard line but is actually a bit off.

The band is preparing its first show of the year, "Duplicity," which tells an epic story of power and betrayal and is based on the Cirque de Soleil show "Ka." The band aims to have the show ready for East's first football game Aug. 30, Edge said.

"It is going to be amazing," he said. "The whole design has been a lot of fun to put together."
