2 Austin residents killed in crash; 5 of 7 injured from Victoria, Port Lavaca
Two people from Austin, including a 14-year-old boy, died in Sunday's two-vehicle wreck in Refugio County.
Two adults from Victoria, three children from Port Lavaca and two other children from Austin were also injured in the head-on collision on state Highway 35 at 4:37 p.m.
Nicole Lowenberg, 45, and Samson Stoffregen, 14, were pronounced dead at the scene by Refugio County Justice of the Peace Lorraine Lopez, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety report.
Lopez ordered an autopsy on Lowenberg at Central Texas Autopsy in Lockhart.
Lowenberg was driving south on the highway in a 2007 Land Rover Range Rover when a 2012 Dodge Ram pickup headed north, driven by Leo George Click, 43, of Victoria, crossed the center line, and the vehicles collided head on, according to the report.
The Range Rover spun around and came to rest on a guardrail. The pickup rolled over and came to rest upright in a ditch.
In addition to Click, passengers in his vehicle injured were Carol Tucker Beerwart, 45, of Victoria; Leo Click, 11, Sky Click, 9, and Kati Diercks, 9, all of Port Lavaca.
The children were taken to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi, according to the DPS report.
Beerwart was taken to Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, and Leo George Click was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi.
Two children in the Range Rover - Nicholas Lowenberg, 14, and Trey Lowenberg, 10, both of Austin - were also taken to Driscoll.
As of Monday afternoon, the children were all listed in fair condition at Driscoll Children's Hospital, except Nicholas Lowenberg, who was treated and released, and Leo Click, who was not listed in hospital records, a hospital spokesman said.
Beerwart was in stable condition at Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Leo George Click was in stable condition at Christus Spohn.
Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt, according to the report.
DPS Trooper Michael Perkins is investigating the crash.
