Senators are right to make stand on Obamacare

Aug. 22, 2013 at 3:22 a.m.

Editor, the Advocate:

It is not the tea party Republican senators who want to shut down the government. They have repeatedly stated that the government should be funded, including all entitlements. They simply do not want to fund Obamacare now, which makes perfect sense. The employer mandate of Obamacare has already been delayed for good cause; there are good reasons to delay (not repeal) what's left. The larger and more important reason to delay Obamacare is we cannot pay for it in its current state.

Somehow, our great country continues its battle to keep us alive and well despite our continual abuse to it, including our pathway down a one-way road to ruin. Congress lacks the will, courage or commitment to tackle bad laws, including health care, tax reform and others, and our informed public has grown to comprehend this. It is highly unlikely that Congress will ever turn the ship with continued borrowing. If we don't change the business as usual mentality inside the beltway, there will be a frightening legacy to leave for our children.

I, for one, salute these senators for having the initiative to take on the old guard in a cause for the continued well-being and survival of our nation. These senators are making a bold statement to the rest of Congress and the world that there are those who have taken the oath and stand by it, whatever the political or social cost. I invite every concerned citizen to stand up with, lead or follow these men and other leaders who share the concept that this is a country of "We the People" and let these voices be heard by those who can still make a difference.

The health of our country cannot continue to be immune to the impunities afforded it by those congressmen who are bought and paid for, do nothing and panhandle with self-serving interests; we must demand that this type of representative immediately step down. It's not only our health that depends on it - so does our way of life and our continued existence in this land of the free and the home of the brave.
