EDNA - When the rest of Edna is ready to close shop, the Texas Country Oaks Dance Hall is revving up for a night of dancing and live country music.
Featuring country bands that range from contemporary to traditional, Texas Country Oaks already rivals some of Texas' more established honky-tonks.
"The dance hall business is probably one of the hardest businesses to be in. You never know what kind of crowd you're going to get," said Sandra Stephens, Texas Country Oaks co-owner. "But we've loved it. We enjoy our people and the dancing."
Since the hall opened more than two years ago, Stephens and her husband, Tommy Stephens, have been accepted in the community with welcoming arms.
"I stand at the door and take tickets for every dance, and it's amazing the relationships you build with everyone who comes through that door," she said.
And the couple's mission to bring back "down-home country music" has, so far, been a success.
"So many halls haven't made it. I look at it as trying to keep country music alive," said Tommy Stephens.
As Jackson County's only premier dance hall, the Stephens have been able to provide area residents with the perfect venue for weddings, proms and weekend dancing.
And on the weekend, when regular dances are scheduled, families and children are welcome.
The 400-occupancy building is equipped with smoke ventilation, allowing smokers to occupy one half of the dance hall without bothering the non-smoking side.
The Stephenses said they're looking forward to many great years running the dance hall for Edna, and they welcome groups of all kinds to consider hosting events at Texas Country Oaks.
"That's what we want: to get everybody to come out," she said. "I know if we went out of business tomorrow, I wouldn't mind because we accomplished what we set out to do - bring good country music to the area."
