Superintendent's column: Power of Victoria's education lies in people

It is truly an exciting time in the Victoria ISD, and we are fired up for our first day of school Monday. As I travel across our "612 Square Miles of Excellence," it is clearly evident that we have the opportunity for greatness at our doorstep and the people who possess the will to make this greatness possible. It is also a wonderful time to revisit the "business of our business."

In the Victoria ISD, we believe that as educators our primary focus is to provide all children in our community the opportunity to develop their mental, moral and physical capabilities to their maximum potential. Our students are our most important resource and the core value of every decision we make. By working together and focusing on "every child, every classroom, every day," we can and will continue to offer our students the quality of education they so richly deserve.

We also believe that excellence in education is based on professional standards of excellence for students, faculty and staff. We must continue to review and redefine strategies that will enable us to reach new heights and maintain our focus on academic excellence.

The power of any school district lies deep within its people. Our schools belong to the people of our community, and community support is a must if a school district is to operate successfully. As educational leaders, we believe that every parent has a dream that his or her child will be happy and successful. As a school district, we equally share in this dream, and we are committed to providing engaging, appropriate and challenging experiences for all students. We also realize that preparing our students for success in the workforce is secondary to our responsibility to prepare them for success in life.

It has been said that we should not limit our challenges but instead challenge our limits. In the Victoria ISD, we truly believe that if we fully devote ourselves to our dreams, we will conquer every challenge that comes before us, and we will become the school district we aspire to be. Charles DuBois once stated, "The important thing is this: to be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we can become." On behalf of our board of trustees and our entire school district, thank you for challenging us to do more, to learn more, to dream more and, most importantly, to become more. We are proud to be the VISD.
