Handmade quilts are always a popular auction item at the annual Sacred Heart Parish Fall Picnic in Hallettsville on Sunday. This year's auction will also include a piece of Waterford Crystal brought from Ireland by Monsignor John Peters.

HALLETTSVILLE - The live auction is always one of the highlights of the annual Sacred Heart Parish fall picnic, and Sunday's 131st edition will be no exception.

In addition to the usual array of handmade quilts and numerous other items, Monsignor John Peters has hand-carried a piece of Waterford Crystal from Ireland for the auction.

"This is a very special item that anyone would be proud to own," Peters said.

The picnic also includes a meal of country-fried chicken, stew and homemade cornbread dressing at the Knights of Columbus Hall for $8 a plate, $4 for children.

Drive-thru plates are available from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and diners will be served in the hall until 1:30 p.m.

Music on the main pavilion begins at 11 a.m. with the Kovanda's Czech Band.

A free dance on the polka pavilion will be from 1 to 9 p.m. with Dujka Brothers and the Red Ravens.

Bingo will be played from noon to 6 p.m. In addition, there will be a cakewalk, country store and religious artifacts booth.

A washer pitching tournament starts at 5 p.m., and children's rides and games will also be available all afternoon.
